On its website, the company says Arrowhead bottled water comes from 13 “mountain spring sources in and West of the Rockies.” It lists the namesake Arrowhead Spring as a single site, calling it “our original spring source.”

Similar to spring water, mineral water also originates underground from a protected water source, usually as runoff from mountains and rock formations. The stark difference? Mineral water flows over rocks, which allows it to pick up trace minerals unlike spring water.

Water filtration is key While spring water has been naturally filtered through underground aquifers, purified water also goes through a strict treatment and filtration process for purity. So both are excellent sources of hydration, but while purified water is classed as 'pure', spring water can be better for you.

The Arrowhead Springs Co. began bottling in 1909, serving Southern California from a location just north of San Bernardino. The plant moved to Los Angeles in 1917 and added a Department of Distilled Water in 1922 (Figures 5 & 6). The firm merged with the Puritas Water Co.

All spring water ultimately originates from precipitation (Figure 2). Rain and melted snow seep into the ground where they collect as groundwater in porous rock material (aquifer) lying above a relatively impervious layer of rock (confining bed). The top of this layer of groundwater is called the water table.
