Set in a post-apocalyptic and dystopian Chicago, the story follows Tris Prior, her boyfriend Four, and their small group of friends escaping over the wall that enclosed the city. Once outside, however, they discover new truths that will shift their alliances and introduce new threats.

Tobias realized Tris sided with Marcus and betrayed him, but she argues that he should know her better to understand there was a purpose to her coming. Tobias later finds the information Marcus and Tris were after, and releases it for everyone to see just as Evelyn declares the factionless now in control of government.

Tobias grieves Tris' death, as well as Uriah's removal from life support. He considers taking memory serum so he can start over and forget his pain. Christina stops him, reminding him that those actions aren't what Tris would have wanted. Two-and-a-half years later, Tobias is living in a peaceful Chicago.

In the book, Four has told Evelyn that he and Tris have broken up, but he doesn't hide his relationship with her in the film.
