Set in a post-apocalyptic and dystopian Chicago, the story follows Tris Prior, her boyfriend Four, and their small group of friends escaping over the wall that enclosed the city. Once outside, however, they discover new truths that will shift their alliances and introduce new threats.

Evelyn outlines a plan for peace, and the Allegiant accept the terms. Tris ultimately takes Caleb's place in the mission, hoping perhaps her Divergence will make her immune to the death serum. David catches her and shoots her. Just before dying, Tris manages to release the memory serum into the Bureau.

When Allegiant grossed less than $180 million worldwide, compared to the $300 million Insurgent made the year before, the studios realized they could no longer confidently invest in the YA dystopian movies for a considerable profit at the box office. Audience interest in YA movies had shrunk as well.

Production on the fourth and final movie was scheduled for summer 2016, although it hit a stumbling block when director Robert Schwentke decided against returning, reportedly because he needed a break after filming the previous two movies back-to-back.

The big conflict is that the Allegiant are uprising against Evelyn and the Factionless. The Bureau is in charge of the city, but the citizens do not know that they exist. To stop everyone from killing themselves, the Bureau decides to reset everyone's memories with the memory serum.

Tris decides to forgive Tobias and commit to staying with him because she chose him and she'll choose him every day forever and ever and ever. He agrees that's a good idea.

One controversial element of Veronica Roth's Allegiant novel was its ending, where Tris sacrifices herself and is shot dead. Many fans hated this outcome, with Roth even responding to the outcry on her blog following the book's publication to address the reasons she killed the character.
