History. Grasshopper has been a family-owned business since 1969, when the first Grasshopper mower was introduced (invented by LeRoy Stucky, who also designed the trademark) and has expanded to include a 300,000-square-foot (28,000 m2) manufacturing facility in Moundridge.

1969 When company engineers designed our first Grasshopper mower in 1969, they envisioned a low maintenance, highly maneuverable mower tough enough to serve the commercial mowing industry. They delivered one that would transform the industry in the years to come.

It got it's start on the 70s show “Kung Fu”, where the more senior and wiser kung fu master would refer to the young noviciate as “little grasshopper” to emphasize his youth and inexperience.

Grasshopper is primarily used to build generative algorithms, such as for generative art. Many of Grasshopper's components create 3D geometry. Programs may also contain other types of algorithms including numeric, textual, audio-visual and haptic applications.

1918 Tradition claims it was invented in 1918 by Phillip Guichet Sr., a proprietor of Tujague's Restaurant in New Orleans. Tradition is here oddly specific: The first Grasshopper took second place in a cocktail competition held in New York City.
