Tresiba (insulin degludec) can last out of the fridge, at room temperature (below 86°F [30°C]), for 56 days (8 weeks). This includes Tresiba that is in-use (opened) and not in-use (unopened).

In use (opened) After first use, Tresiba® can be stored at room temperature (up to 86°F [30°C]) or in the refrigerator (36°F to 46°F [2°C to 8°C]) without the needle attached for a maximum of 8 weeks (56 days).

Supply update regarding the Tresiba® U100 FlexTouch® Tresiba® FlexTouch® (Insulin degludec) 100units/ml pens will be out of stock from August 2023 until January 2024. Tresiba Penfill® (Insulin degludec) 100units/ml solution for injection 3ml cartridges remain available and can support increased demand.

Tresiba contains insulin degludec, an ultra-long-acting insulin that starts to work 60 minutes after administration and keeps working for up to 42 hours. Tresiba is approved for use in adults and children over the age of one with type 1 or type 2 diabetes.

Unopened and stored in this manner, these products maintain potency until the expiration date on the package. Insulin products contained in vials or cartridges supplied by the manufacturers (opened or unopened) may be left unrefrigerated at a temperature between 59°F and 86°F for up to 28 days and continue to work.

And if you leave it out of the fridge for 28 days or more you'll need to throw it away as the insulin will have broken down. Some insulins may need to be stored slightly differently so make sure you read the information leaflet that comes with yours, or ask your healthcare team for more advice.

Opened vials, whether or not refrigerated, must be used within 28 days. They must be discarded if not used within 28 days. If refrigeration is not possible, the open vial in use can be kept unrefrigerated for up to 28 days in a place away from direct heat and light, as long as the temperature is not >86°F (30°C).

If a multi-dose has been opened or accessed (e.g., needle-punctured) the vial should be dated and discarded within 28 days unless the manufacturer specifies a different (shorter or longer) date for that opened vial.

Novo Nordisk is experiencing a shortage of Tresiba U100 FlexTouch. We expect this to last from August 2023 until January 2024. It is important to ensure that patients currently using Tresiba FlexTouch 100 U/mL are supported to change to an alternative treatment as soon as possible.

Side effects include: Insulin degludec: Hypoglycemia, allergic reactions, injection site reactions, lipodystrophy, pruritus, rash, edema, weight gain, nasopharyngitis, headache, upper respiratory tract infection, sinusitis, gastroenteritis, diarrhea.

Adults can take once-daily Tresiba® at any time of day and can decide on a time and place that works best. However, children must take their dose at the same time every day.
