Elsa, princess of Arendelle and heiress to the throne, is born with the ability to create and control ice and snow. As a child, she uses her abilities to create a winter wonderland to play in with her younger sister and best friend, Princess Anna. One night, Elsa accidentally harms Anna with her powers.

Elsa can change the weather by creating frost, snow, frozen ground, and a chilly breeze. She can do this over large areas of land or in micro-climates like Olaf's flurry and subsequent permafrost. Arendelle was in the heat of summer when Elsa brought it into the dead of winter.

The hit franchise is another fairytale adaptation; Elsa is based on Hans Christian Andersen's "The Snow Queen," but Frozen flips the script by making her a sympathetic hero. This is a stark contrast to the Disney tradition started by Snow White, in which the villain, The Evil Queen, is unredeemable and two-dimensional.

She clearly cares for the people and works hard to make sure everyone has a good time. She runs away to avoid hurting others, even when the only one she's hurting is herself.
