Stanley was the senior pastor of First Baptist Church Atlanta for more than fifty years. He was also the founder of In Touch Ministries and a New York Times best-selling author, who wrote more than seventy books encouraging people to seek Jesus as their Savior and know Him as their wise and loving Lord.

“Then, as was his habit, he said, 'I couldn't be prouder of you Andy,'” Andy Stanley said. “The source of a word determines its weight. Those were wonderfully weighty words. And his final words to me.”

Baptist pastor Charles Stanley, an influential Baptist pastor who for more than 50 years preached a conservative message from his Atlanta megachurch, through an extensive network of television and radio stations, and in many books, died on Tuesday at his home in Atlanta. He was 90.

History. The church was founded in 1848 in midtown Atlanta, Georgia. Charles Stanley, joined the staff in 1969 and became senior pastor in 1971. In the late 20th century, a commercial facility was purchased on Atlanta's Interstate 285 and the church relocated to the larger, more accessible property in Dekalb County.

While the Bible might not specifically use the word “mission,” the concept is rooted in biblical truth. Mission signifies purposeful movement - being sent from one place to another for a purpose. The apostles of Jesus were among the first to be sent out on a mission to share what Jesus was proclaiming.
