Bean Boots (originally named Maine Hunting Shoes) are a type of water-resistant "duck boots" manufactured by L.L.Bean. They are constructed from a rubber sole and a leather upper. The boots were created in 1911 and were an instant success. The boots became an item of clothing connected to elite prep schools.

One thing to note: If you hike steep muddy trails, consider another boot option; Bean Boots do not provide great traction on slippery hills. Also, Bean Boots are not completely waterproof. Sooner or later, they'll leak around the stitching or right through the leather if completely soaked.

The fit of the L.L.Bean Boot is generous to allow for insulation in cold weather. To wear with light or midweight socks: If you wear a whole size, order one size down from your normal size. If you wear a half size, order one and a half sizes down. Example: If you wear either a 9 or a 9½, order a size 8.

If you did not get instructions, follow this general advice: Be careful not to get the boot wet. Ask your doctor if you can take the boot off when you use ice.
