Operation Smile creates solutions that deliver free cleft surgery and comprehensive care to people where it is needed most. Founded in the U.S., Operation Smile's footprint and its global network of caring, passionate people provide services, raise funds and recruit volunteers.

As well as life-changing cleft surgery, Operation Smile provides comprehensive cleft care including nutrition dentistry, orthodontics, speech therapy, and psychosocial care.

Operation Smile has provided over 220,000 surgeries for children and young adults born with cleft lips, cleft palates, and other facial deformities in over 60 countries since 1982, at no cost to the recipients.

Kathy Magee Kathy Magee is the President and CEO of Operation smile, which she co-founded in 1982 with her husband, Dr. Bill Magee.

In 17 years Operation Smile has helped 53,000 children, but there have been persistent allegations that the organisation, which employs 54 people in its Norfolk headquarters, is badly run. One former director this week described the administration of Operation Smile as "a farce".

The two organizations have different models. Smile Train spends its money training and equipping local doctors in China, India and elsewhere to do the operations as they are needed. Operation Smile pays to fly doctors and equipment around the world, providing services episodically.

(Dr) Vincent Yeow A/Prof (Dr) Vincent Yeow Dr Yeow has personally volunteered and led more than 30 surgical missions across various countries since 1995. Dr Yeow is the founder of Smile Asia. He also led the formation of The Smile Mission Ltd (formerly Operation Smile Singapore Ltd) and currently its Chairman.

Globally, Operation Smile has been a registered charity since 1998.

Smile Train was founded in 1999. Since then, Smile Train has grown into the world's leading cleft charity, helping more than 1,500,000 children with clefts, training thousands of medical professionals in 90+ countries, and establishing hundreds of programs in low- and middle-income countries.
