My go-to setup for bowhunting turkeys is what I call the love triangle. The love triangle consists of two hen decoys set very close - say three to five yards - at 45-degree angles. Directly between the two hens, but farther out at 10 to 15 yards, I place a male decoy over a bedded hen.

A decoy is a visual that may be misidentified by a hunter as a live hen or gobbler. I don't want to be in the line of fire of someone trying to shoot my decoy. But I can put my decoy out into the field or swamp because when I call to a gobbler, and he's coming to me, he expects to see a hen.

J Decoy Spread Also known in some 'fowling circles as The Fishhook or simply The Hook, the J is the go-to spread whenever you target divers, regardless of whether you're gunning from shore or from a boat. Visually, the J is just as it's written.

The decoys are set in a circle with a small flock or an individual decoy in the center. No matter which way the wind is blowing, ducks will either head for the upwind, inside edge of the circle of decoys to land at the tails or they'll target the small flock (or single) in the center.

The single best decoy anyone can own is a submissive, half- or quarter-strut jake. If you're into shooting any legal turkey, this type of jake will draw in anything with a beard. These dekes are effective all spring, so long as you pair them with the right birds.

Early in the season I like to use a hen and jake decoy, or a strutter decoy if I have one, says Culpepper. Mainly when it's still early, turkeys are figuring out their pecking order and don't seem to have established that dominance yet, so I've seen a strutter work really well early on.

Decoys like scarecrows, balloons, fake owls and even rubber snakes can be places to keep birds away.

This won't get a jake or confident 2-year old to come in, but a boss gobbler with hens will take the bait almost every time. Turkey decoys work. There's no doubt about that. But success is not as easy as staking a decoy, making a few calls, and pulling the trigger. Gobblers can be downright finicky; most of us know from first-hand experience.

On smaller, confined waters, a spread of six to 36 decoys should be sufficient. On larger waters or dry fields, hunters should put out as many decoys as practical. I never heard of anybody scaring ducks or geese away because they used too many decoys. Typically, the more, the merrier.
