The original 'white' Jake quit his job and they needed someone to replace him.. he was originally an actual employ of state farm.. they just found some random actor after he left.

Jake failed to read the new party on the line the call recording disclosure. "This line may be monitored and recorded" is required to be stated any time a new party joins the line. This resulted in a compliance and quality fail for Jake which ultimately lead to his termination.

State Farm said that a real actor was needed for the demanding nature of the expanded role, but the original Jake did well enough during his acting debut that he inspired a cult following. Surely he could have just as easily recorded himself drinking coffee from his desk at home right?

Wings' Arike Ogunbowale and Mavericks' Mark Cuban star in new State Farm commercial.
