Rammstein's Deutschland in his lyrics refers to the Nazi anthem in his lyrics with “deutschland über allen” and in the video a half-blind Germany is seen by the injustices that were committed in the concentration camps.

Rammstein's first major boost in popularity outside Germany came when music director Trent Reznor chose two Rammstein songs, Heirate mich and Rammstein, for David Lynch's film Lost Highway. The soundtrack for the film was released in the US in the fall of 1996 and later throughout Europe in April 1997.

Rammstein was traditionally inspired by bands such as the Slovenian group Laibach, known for its provocative songs, often citing political symbols of the far-right and whose music style also combines different genres, or the German rock band Oomph!

Marilyn Manson: The American rock musician is a big fan of Rammstein and has cited them as an influence on his own music. Lady Gaga: The pop star has mentioned Rammstein as one of her favorite bands and has said that their live shows inspired her own performances.

Rammstein's ability to shock and titillate with their risqué performances is legendary, and never was it showcased better than at 1998 Family Values tour stop in Worcester, Massachusetts, where their ultra-sexual antics landed a couple band members in jail following the performance.

The simple answer is that the video isn't about endings, its more about new beginnings – rebirth. Throughout we see scenes of Rammstein partaking in the destruction of their past selves. Whilst this is a farewell of sorts, its more of a farewell to the old so that they can make way for the new.
