If you have served at least one day of active military duty since December 7, 1941 and were honorably discharged or you are still serving active military duty honorably, you are eligible for membership with The American Legion.

What is the difference between the VFW and the American Legion? Simply put, the American Legion generally accepts Veterans of the US Military no matter where they served. The VFW however, only accepts Veterans of the US Military who served overseas in a combat zone or received hostile fire pay.

In 1919, The American Legion was founded on four pillars: Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation, National Security, Americanism, and Children & Youth. For a Veteran to be considered a wartime Veteran, they would have had to have served during a period of war. This is different from a combat Veteran who actively engaged in combat during their service. A wartime Veteran might not have seen any combat.
