The Consumer Product Safety Commission said Triaminic Syrups and Theraflu Warming Relief Syrups for cough, colds and fevers were voluntarily recalled by the manufacturer, Novartis Consumer Health, because the cap could still be removed by a child even with the tamper-resistant seal in place.

This product contains a decongestant (such as pseudoephedrine, phenylephrine) that works by narrowing the blood vessels to help relieve stuffy nose symptoms and sinus pressure. This product also contains a non-opioid cough suppressant (such as dextromethorphan, chlophedianol).

It is usually used to relieve coughing, but it also produces a feeling of relaxation and drowsiness. Additionally, some people who have conditions with associated pain use NyQuil to help maintain a pain-free state of sleep.

Cough syrups do have one known benefit: They can make you drowsy and help you get to sleep, which is likely very much needed. (Cough syrup is not recommended for children under the age of four.) Just don't take more than instructed because that can be seriously dangerous.
