Richard Montañez This is the inspiring true story of Richard Montañez who, as a Frito Lay janitor, disrupted the food industry by channeling his Mexican heritage to turn Flamin' Hot Cheetos from a snack into an iconic global pop culture phenomenon.

Brad Morgan Cheetos' original mascot was the Cheetos Mouse, who debuted in 1971 and disappeared around 1979. In 1986 Chester Cheetah was created by Brad Morgan, who art directed the commercials and designed the character, and Stephen Kane who wrote the original scripts for television commercials.

Cheetos (formerly styled as Chee-tos until 1998) is a crunchy corn puff snack brand made by Frito-Lay, a subsidiary of PepsiCo. Fritos creator Charles Elmer Doolin invented Cheetos in 1948, and began national distribution in the United States.

The Cheetos brand is commonly recognized by association with its second and current mascot, an anthropomorphic sly, smooth-voiced cartoon cheetah named Chester Cheetah. Chester first appeared in television commercials in 1986, known for concluding Cheetos advertisements with slogans, which have evolved over time.

Cheetos are “one of the most marvelously constructed foods on the planet, in terms of pure pleasure”, food scientist Steven Witherly told the New York Times reporter Michael Moss in 2013. “If something melts down quickly, your brain thinks that there's no calories in it … you can just keep eating it forever.”

According to Montañez, he took action after a Cheeto machine broke down, bringing a batch of unflavored snacks to his home and seasoning them with spices similar to Mexican street corn.

Did he invent Flamin' Hot Cheetos? The Los Angeles Times investigation concluded that he did not, based on interviews with more than a dozen former Frito-Lay employees, company records and some glaring inconsistencies - nay, impossibilities - in his story.

Having a mouse for a mascot made clear sense for Cheetos, Frito-Lay's cheese-dusted fried corn puffs. Mice, by reputation, like cheese. Cheetos were cheesy, after a fashion. And so in the early 1970s, the brand debuted its first character: a rather debonair and multitalented mouse.

For all those people who say that the Cheetos mascot isn't a cheetah. He is and his name is Chester, Chester Cheetah.
