Vipul Amrutlal Shah's film The Kerala Story has been declared as 'tax-free' in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. The year's most controversial film yet, The Kerala Story has been declared as tax-free in the Indian states of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.

Film tax incentives typically come in the form of tax credits equal to a percentage of a film or television production's qualified in-state spending and/or exemptions from sales tax on qualified transactions.

The reasoning behind this move by tax officials is that Netflix has stationed some of its employees and infrastructure from the parent entity in India to provide support for its streaming services. This has led to the establishment of a permanent presence in India, which in turn creates a liability for taxes.

Film financing can be acquired from a private investor, sponsor, product placement, film studio, entertainment company, and/or out-of-pocket funds.

The idea behind a film tax credit is pretty simple: by moving production to a state, you'll be able to save money on taxes owed, or get some other perks in exchange for shooting on location there. Of course you may have to use a certain amount of local vendors to qualify, but every offer is different.

Netflix plans and prices

As a member, you are automatically charged once a month on the date you signed up. Your Netflix subscription is charged at the beginning of your billing cycle and can take several days to appear on your account. Your billing date may be one day earlier or later due to time zone differences.

There's merchandising, VOD, streaming video, foreign sales, and a plethora of other distribution channels that can help filmmakers, producers, and studios turn a profit. So who knows, the little indie that you invest in could just be the next "Little Miss Sunshine." Or not. In Hollywood, there are no guarantees.

Personnel are paid by the shoot, and each shoot lasts only a few weeks or months. For each new job, productions have to rinse and repeat the entire process from scratch. If it's an independent film, that often means incorporating a new production company for each new project.

Think of it as a catch-all term. Film Tax Credits: cover a portion of income tax a production company would owe to the state. Cash Rebates: are percentages of a production company's spending, distributed to production companies after the shoot. Grants: are given to production companies before production starts.
