What kind of company is Decca Records?
Decca Records is a British record label founded in 1929 by Edward Lewis. Originally, the label was intended to become a competitor to the eminent American record labels such as Columbia, RCA Victor, and Victor Talking Machine Company, which dominated the worldwide market at the time.
From the start, Decca Records gained substantial market share in the UK. It was also one of the first labels to record classical and opera music, with the likes of John Barbirolli and the London Symphony Orchestra recording on the label in its early years. The company also made a name for itself in the jazz and blues genre, with releases by Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, and other genre legends.
Over the years, Decca Records continued to grow and add new artists to its label. This included The Rolling Stones, The Who, and many other famous musicians. In the 1960s, Decca Records established an innovative label called Deram Records, which was renowned for its psychedelic rock acts such as The Moody Blues and Procol Harum.
In 1980, the record label was purchased by the PolyGram company and then later merged with Universal Music Group in 1999. Despite these changes, Decca Records remains one of the most respected record labels across the world, well known for its extensive back catalogue of recordings in the classical, jazz, blues, and rock genres.
